事の発端は、1月29日に駐日フィンランド大使館がTwitter公式アカウント（@FinEmbTokyo）で、「フィンランド伝説の狙撃手、Simo Häyhäはシモ・ヘイへではなく、実際には『シモ・ハユハ』と読みます」とつぶやいたことでした。このツイートは50件以上のお気に入り登録とリツイートがされ、Twitter上で話題になりました。はてなブックマークのコメント欄でも「なんだってー！」「おお、知らなかった。これでドヤ顔できるよありがとうｗ」「大使館がわざわざ発表するあたりにフィンランドの本気を見た」などの声が寄せられています。

読み方の違いについて駐日フィンランド大使館は、「ハユハをヘイへと読んだのは英語話者の方ではないでしょうか、多分」とつぶやいています。
